Colours May Vary // Design and development

The client asked for the original illustration from our mailer (above) to be applied to the window. We decided to provide extra by expanding this into a family of personified sandwiches, each with their own distinct characteristics. We were careful to measure the window to avoid clashes with any of the existing vinyl and to create a layout that was balanced and would allow customers to see in and out of the store clearly. We sketched out some ideas for characters and while I worked on the nerdy sandwich kid, andy worked on the cool burger and triangle sandwich.

Here are the final 4 designs. We decided to use 6 colours in our design and remove the white elements so that people are able to see through the designs and into the window.

In order to prepare this for application, we had to separate all of the colours into separate layers to be cut in vinyl. The range of colours we needed was outside the stock that James provides and so we ordered from eBay. The materials came to roughly £40 in total.

Here was our diagram for applying the vinyl. We had to measure the space carefully to avoid covering any of the existing vinyl on the window. We will use this diagram to make sure that the composition stays consistant as we move from one element to another.
