Indie Game // Developing environment blocks

At this stage me and Andy were trying to establish a format for environment blocks that we could use across the whole of the level. We knew that we needed to include a good amount of detail to give the level a feeling of terrain and scale. This was challenge within the pixel grid, as there are limited changes that can be made within the space. Highlights, shadows and colour variations were all techniques that I found helped to make more interesting blocks. We were both heavily inspired by the block construction of Fez:

Trying to make blocks that were stylised but simple and repeatable, I designed this minecraft inspired format for earth blocks. This looked interesting but lacked the level of detail we would need for this project.

As andy worked on the desert level, I started work on other block patterns for ice and space:

This ice block pattern was interesting, making good use of the pixel format to add tiny details that give the terrain character. I liked how well the top part repeated without obviously repeating.

Lastly I attempted to design a futuristic space-station stage, using a bright green colour and industrial grey to illustrate space age technology
